DOOM 3 or not DOOM 3?
December 13th 2004, 15:26 CET by JasonB

It looks like DOOM 3 the movie will be in the theaters on August 5, 2005.
Budget:  $70M
Director: Andrzej Barkowiak (Cradle 2 the Grave)
Writer:   Dave Callahan (???)
Actors:  Karl Urban (Eomer from Lord of the Rings)
Rosamund Pike (Hottie from Die Another Day)
"The Rock"  (Soon to be Governor "The Rock" ?)

Screenwriter Dave Callahan claims “everyone was keen to keep the game’s atmosphere”, though there are some “minor” changes done to the film’s concept: The monsters have nothing to do with hell, the plot is not taking place on Mars and “space marines” are not well “space marines” as their outfits are more like SWAT team members.

So what's DOOM 3 about this movie?  After "Final Fantasy", "Wing Commander" and "Tomb Raider" do we have any right to expect any movie based on a game to be worth watching?  The writer describes the movie as more of a horror film than an action flick...who is this jerk and where can I send the hate mail?

You mean you didn't see UAC all over the place when you played Doom 3?  Try turning your flashlight on more often, ya dumb Texan!

Deth, that it's stupid doesn't mean the game can't be fun.  I haven't liked the various DOOM games very much, but I don't like most shooters, so whatever.  I'm just saying, the roots of the thing are shallow and goofy and trying to tease meaning or logic out of it is pointless.  Just shoot the space demons and relax, the "why" of it all is irrelevant.

I do not think I hate any individual actor enough to make them the default grunt model. I am sure someone can come up with a good example of one I can agree with. Ralph is just nothing to me. He wasn't even something when he was supposed to be something to me (read teen years).

Just out of interest is the new enhanced Crapsifter on its way? You're probably aware of this bug with the current version but... if an advanced search throws up more than one page of answers, clicking the "next page" button will lose your advanced variables.

For example if I'm searching for "wang" under Joker's name, when I click "next page" it will bring me page two of a search for the word "wang", regardless of poster identity.

This has been discussed to death, but when you're carrying 8 guns and one flashlight, taping the flashlight to one gun isn't a particularly good solution.

This question applies to virtually every FPS ever made with the exception of the Halo games.

The answer is: it is a goddamn videogame you jackass.

The aim of law enforcement (in the most romantic view) is not to play goody-two-shoes, but to protect the innocent from the guilty. Who cares if they have to break the law to kill the guilty in order to do that?

Doesn't destroy my argument at all.  My argument isn't that things have to be realistic, it is that they can be as realistic or unrealistic as the game developer wants to get the gameplay devices they want.

My original "can't tape all the guns" statement wasn't made because I think the game should try to be realistic, but rather to show that if you're going to demand the game allow you to do something realistic (as Fly was), you should at least think it all the way through and make sure what you're asking for really is realistic....

So fuck you, McBain, you stupid Mick.

I always suspect that an always-on flashlight wasn't provided due to performance issues.  After all, it's one less lightsource you have to worry about during hectic firefight scenes.

Stupid decision any way you slice it, though.

As for the "how can you carry all those guns" blehblah, shush up already or someone is going to hear you and set about "fixing" things.  After all, this is what happened with Deus Ex 2 and we all got "unified ammo" - next we'll get a "unified gun" that picks up different ammo - and later, we'll get a one gun that picks up one ammo type, but magically converts that ammo into a flamethrower, .45 pistol, or chainsaw at will.  YAY!

I'm anti-death penalty myself.  If you have to kill a suspect trying to aprehend them or to stop a crime in progress, that's one thing - but after he's been captured and incarcerated, then killing him is going beyond justice and making people safe, into the realm of pure revenge.  Bleh to that - and, like Chuckles said, what if it turns up, years later, that he didn't actually do it?  You never know.

Cool!  We'll call that a nano-bot program.  Pick up the program and load it into your gun so it could function as that type of weapon.  Rock.

I really think the grave error in DX2 was continuing in the DX1 universe.  It would have been better as a FF type game where sequels contain central themes and styles, but was a whole new game without any carry over.

The changes they're making for the movie don't bother me, fans always bitch and whine about any adaptation (see also: comic book movies) but in the end the only thing that matters is whether the movie is any good or not.  Which brings us to the most important point; the movie is going to suck.  There is nothing they can do that'll make it not suck.  It doesn't matter if they based the whole thing flawlessly on the Doom series and even included a fucking IDDQD cheat, it'll still suck.  HOLLYWOOD: STOP MAKING VIDEOGAME MOVIES, THEY SUCK.  It's true you know - take HL2 for instance, it's got bundles of atmosphere that could work really well in movie form, but if they ever make the movie it'll suck.

However in response to Scott's post, I don't think it'll hurt the Doom "brand", I think the public are savvy enough to draw the line between games and movies.  Think about the whichever Game: The Movie you've seen, has the painful awfulness of the movie affected how you rate the game or any future titles in the series?  Basically Id can kill the brand in two ways, by releasing crap games or by not releasing anything at all.
