Good times for VR?
January 18th 2013, 00:53 CET by TreeFrog

If you're anything like me (protip: don't be anything like me), you'll remember the short-lived VR craze with some hipster-grade ironic nostalgia, but mostly with disappointment. William Gibson had promised us digital otherworlds over a decade ago, and all we got was The Lawnmower Man. And that wasn't even a documentary, people!

But! Now some punk called Palmer Luckey, who has the temerity to be only 20 years old, is all like "hey, here's this Oculus Rift VR headset I just crapped out this morning and BTW it's the most awesome shit you peasants have ever seen" AND HE'S NOT WRONG.

AND! On top of that we have the Leap Motion guys and their millimetre-precision doodad taking a big enough crap on the Kinect that Asus are offering aforementioned doodad as an option with their PCs. We'll ignore the oh-so-90s Best Buy retail exclusivity.

Interesting times.

You're old by scoffing at new words. I will make an effort to use adorkable in a sentence asap.

New Girl is funny.  Not really because of Zooey Deschanel though.

New Girl started poorly but it's slowly got better, to the point it's a harmless watch over a sandwich or whatever.  As JJ said though, it's largely down to a strong supporting cast, the new girl herself doesn't actually add much.  If all else fails, Hannah Simone.

Since we have native English speakers from various countries here it seems a good place to ask: how should the word 'width' be pronounced? Is it like 'with' or more like 'wide' with a 'th' at the end?

It's one of those words where the pronunciation varies according to region and speaker but the 'wi-' part is always pronounced as in 'with' and never as in 'wide'. Some people pronounce the 'd', but very lightly. Others pronounce it almost exactly like 'with' but with a sharper, shorter 'th' sound.

Today I started Minecraft again for a few minutes and loaded a save where I was starving, so my health was decreasing an I had no food on me. I started running up the stairs, through a cave, up more stairs, armed myself with a sword just to be sure, got on the ground, jumped up to my floating glass house and opened the chest and chewed down a raw porkchop just as my health stopped decreasing on 0.5/10 hearts.

I turned around and enjoyed the sunset.

I stopped watching after five minutes, these press events always come off like glossy powerpoint presentations given by car salesmen.  They should have saved the money and instead released a couple of pages of facts and some screenshots and videos.  Y'know, a press pack.

It was kind of underwhelming. How do you announce a device without showing the device? Even the Phantom had a mockup of what it was supposed to look like.

Watchdogs looks neat, and the footage looks legit. Don't really care about the power in the hardware, but fun games are fine.

I never watch these things live, I just read the recaps. Sqenix announce that they're beginning to consider starting to develop a PS4 Final Fantasy game. Hold the presses!

I predict:
ludicrous launch price, again
lousy sales due to there only being 5 launch titles, 3 of which are shit, and no backwards compatibility
a massive post-Christmas price cut
still not enough uptake
Sony's creditors get nervous and stop extending credit
RIP Sony.

Nah, it won't (or maybe I should say shouldn't) have a stupid high price tag. They're using x86 so that should be cheap, and the cost in BD has come down enough that the cost of that will be cheap, and everything else is a commodity. It'll get a $400 price cause it's 'new.' Anything more is stupid.

That's a little quick to call Sony d0med. We have yet to see what Microsoft is going to bring this round and it looks like Nintendo isn't exactly doing well so far with the Wii U.

Console makers are clearly having a hard time figuring out where to go with the new console generation, what people want at this point. When Microsoft and Sony have both shown their hands I wouldn't be surprised if someone else steps in taking advantage of the knowledge of Sony and MS' launches.

I liked what I saw but with little detail being given up at this point I'm coming up with more questions then excitement right now. Especially for the social, gaikai, and the 'don't call it smartglass' features. All that sounds great with a good group of friends but are they free, PSN+, or some super premium thing? Is 'don't call it smartglass' able to do the whole second screen streaming on any device or is it just a glorified media remote?  If not what's the excuse for locking gaikai (that's already been shown to do that) to just allowing it on the Vita, please make it entertaining at least.

On top of that while I don't expect to ever hear an answer I'd love to know if they've looked at the PSN cert process and costs. They did say something about it being easier for smaller titles to be developed but nothing on if it's going to be easier to actually get to the store or if it's still a niche title budget killer to patch.

Oh, and I visited PlanetHalfLife a lot back in the day. But all the Planet* sites are now under IGN's banner.

The first "IBM Compatible" computer I ever bought had some bullshit OS on it called GEM. CP/M based I think it was.

What a rube I was leaving the store with that. I think i was able to wipe it and throw win 3 on it.

Witcher2 is well worth whatever you pay for it. It may not be an open world, but it is a fantastic ride and a very well put together one time through game.

I think I bought Kali to play Descent because I'm not sure if it did TCP/IP.  Not that I played much Descent online because ping times were terrible and DEAR GOD WHICH WAY IS UP?!

Used Kali a lot for HL/TFC/CS though, at least until Valve's server browser became more or less usable.

As for Gamespy... well I used to visit PlanetHalfLife a fair bit, but not for years and years now.  Which seems to be the story for a lot of people and probably why they're shutting down.  I suppose it's sad as the passing of internet history, but I'd be lying if I said they'll be missed.

Since this is apparently the Good times for Nostalgy? thread now - not that I mind, really - I fall waaay behind you guys as regards to access to Teh Intarnets... it happened back in '97, I think? I was looking for a] hi-res (read: VGA) pics of sexy little computers (by Acer, mostly), b] anything interesting I could find on the poorly protected university network next to us (both porn and handbooks for growing shrooms (that one misfired a bit...)), and c] trying to figure out the cultist's language in Blood... and that is the point where I discovered PlanetBlood, and the rest of the network (then still very much in its infancy).
