But, the UN is not irrelevant when it comes to helping with aid in iraq. They are irrelevant, when it comes to controling iraq, and the oil there.

Yeah, kind of like they are irrelevant when it comes to enforcing their own resolutions that have been ignored for the past decade. Don't be such a hippy :)

The investigations by the inspectors for 1441 did not come to a conclusion. If Iraq was found to be violating 1441, the inspectors would have said it. If Iraq was preventing any kind of inspection work to be done, the inspectors would have said it. What the inspectors said was that they needed more time, and that although they did not yet have everything they needed, they were making progress and Iraq was cooperating. This was also the opinion of the majority of the security council. The UN did not find Iraq to be in violation of 1441. So there was no reason to enforce the consequences, yet.

Did you watch any of the security council meetings where Blix and his cohorts gave their reports? How in the hell can you say any of this if you did? It was pretty clear from their reports that Iraq was not fully cooperating.

Joker Blix said many times that Iraq wasn't fully cooperating. Also not finding any violations of 1441 doesn't make up for all of the other UN resolutions that have been ignored in Iraq in other places (Israel for example).

#86 Are you referring to the fact that Iraq was not able to produce documents of what happened to stuff the USA was saying they had/have? Blix himself said that if the USA had evidence that stuff exists, they should provide it so the inspectors can do their work. Inspectors got access to anything they wanted. Even in the case of destroying the al samoud missiles, iraq didn't want to at first, but eventually they did.

If you say you know for a fact that Iraq has WMDs, without giving good evidence, and demand Iraq show docs that they have them, while those WMDs you talk about don't exist, then yes, Iraq was not fully cooperating.

Let's see how many of these WMDs they find. My guess is, they are all stored somewhere in Baghdad, because so far coalition forces have yet to find them.

Ya know, with American and British troops all over Iraq, and in Baghdad basically, you'd think that if Iraq had all of these chemical and biological WMD's, that something would have been found by now. Sure, they've found several hundred chem suits at different locations...but as of yet, nothing where any threatening agents are concerned....*shrug*

#87 If that's the case, the USA should step out of the UN and go their own way. Or take steps to get the UN improved or something. But staying a member of it, but then clearly violating all kinds of rules, is a bad thing. Not to mention the incredible hypocrisy because they DO want to use the UN for their own benefit when they can.

#91 trying to defend? d00d?!

Also, I'm not satisfied with the UN's reaction. Sure they say they are against it, but what they need to do is vote on a resolution that makes what the US is doing illegal, or condemn it or something, officially stating the USA broke the rules.
And even though the USA can veto it, they should at least try to get the majority of the votes. That would still be important.

But nobody has the guts to do it. Lamers.

So, Joker, the only option you think the UN has is to make a resolution condemning the war? Maybe they don't want to do that because it would go against their other resolutions, which you seem to ignore.

Joker: What I'm saying, is that if the UN votes on a resolution to condemn the war, they will be showing how completely useless they are. For over ten years the Iraq debate has been going on. The entire time, pressure has been on Iraq to get its shit together. This war is the culmination of all of these years. The UN may not have backed it, but to go against it would be completely against what they have been working for.

When they don't do something against it, it's against what they have been working for. It's a matter of principle. You cannot allow a member nation to openly disregard the UN, and violate many of its rules. You cannot. The UN was established just to prevent this sort of thing. They should act against it. They are cowards of they don't, and shows how ineffective the UN is.

If I was president of a country, and member of the UN, I would demand they talk about this, and do something, or else, I'd have taken my country out of the UN.

Um, wasn't that the job of the UN weapons inspectors? It would have been cheaper (millions of dollars as opposed to billions of dollars) to have let the UN weapons inspector do their job than have the military go in and try to find WMD (which they still haven't encountered yet).

I'm actually surprised right now how quickly the war has been so far. It's been two and a half weeks and already US forces have gone into Baghdad a few times. Then again, Saddam's military was nearly decimated in the 1991 Persian Gulf War and the 12 years of sanctions made it difficult to buy new equipment or repair old ones (no Iraqis jets flown so far and virtuall all Iraqi armour have been destroyed with ease). As Brigadier General Vincent Brooks said the other day at a press conference the war is "very one-sided."
